The total value of mobile money transactions in Ghana reached GH¢3.6 trillion between January and October 2025, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Economic and Financial Data released after last week’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

The figure reflects the cumulative transactions reported by telecom operators and underscores the continued growth of mobile-based payments across the country.

Month-on-month data shows steady expansion, with transactions rising from GH¢406 billion in September to GH¢436 billion in October 2025.

Compared to previous years, the growth is significant. Mobile money transactions for the same 10-month period in 2024 stood at GH¢2.368 trillion, while 2023 recorded GH¢1.367 trillion. The 2025 figure therefore represents a major jump, fuelled by increased adoption of digital payments.

Industry analysts attribute the surge to rising consumer preference for mobile money, broader acceptance of the payment method by businesses and institutions, and ongoing efforts by the Bank of Ghana and financial institutions to promote a cashless economy.

Data from the central bank also indicates that, as of October 2025, there were 79.1 million registered mobile money accounts, with 25.3 million active users. The sector is supported by approximately 949,000 registered agents.

Within the same period, total mobile money transactions reached 893 million, while GH¢40 billion was transferred through mobile money interoperability, allowing users to move funds across different networks.

Analysts say the continued expansion of mobile money reflects its central role in Ghana’s financial ecosystem and its growing influence on formal financial transactions.
