Nana Akomea enters NPP race for first vice-chairman

Former Information Minister and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications Nana Akomea has formally filed his nomination to contest the position of First Vice Chairman in the party’s 2026 national executive elections.

His decision adds significant political and communications experience to a contest that is expected to become increasingly competitive as the NPP prepares to elect its next national executive team.

Akomea has held a number of senior positions within both the NPP and the Ghanaian government. He served as the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South from 1997 to 2013 before joining the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor as Minister of Information.

He later served as the NPP’s Director of Communications, a role in which he became one of the party’s prominent public voices. Akomea was also an important member of the NPP communications team during the party’s 2016 presidential campaign.

That election saw the NPP return to power after eight years in opposition.

His entry into the First Vice Chairman race is expected to intensify the competition for one of the party’s most important national executive positions. The First Vice Chairman supports the party’s national administration and organisational work, while also helping to coordinate its wider operations.

The NPP is currently making arrangements for its 2026 national executive elections. A total of 13 aspirants are reportedly seeking the party’s three vice-chairmanship positions, although the candidates must first complete the vetting process.

The vetting of aspirants has been scheduled for 1 September, with the national executive elections expected to take place in October.

Akomea’s nomination places another experienced political figure among those seeking senior leadership within the party. His background in Parliament, government and party communications is likely to make him a significant candidate as the NPP considers the composition of its next national executive team.

The First Vice Chairman will be part of the leadership responsible for supporting the party’s administration and maintaining coordination across its organisational structures. The election will therefore determine not only the individuals who occupy key positions, but also the team that will oversee the NPP’s internal operations during the next phase of its political activity.

With the nomination period now producing a field of candidates for the three vice-chairmanship roles, attention will turn to the September vetting exercise. The outcome of that process will shape the final contest before members vote in the national executive elections in October.
