Nation-building is a shared responsibility- Cardinal Turkson

His Eminence Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Social Sciences, has encouraged Ghanaians to take an active part in the country’s development, emphasising that a prosperous nation is built through collective effort not solely by the President or government.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Monday, July 7, Cardinal Turkson reminded citizens that nation-building extends beyond the halls of power.

“Ghana is not the President… The nation and the country Ghana are not just the President, his ministers, the cabinet, the government, and the people who elected them. Different people are elected to different positions,” he said.

He pointed out that while government plays a vital role in governance and development, sustainable progress requires each citizen to see themselves as a contributor.

“It is just fair to recognise that nation-building is not only the task of the leadership of the nation but also the citizens and members of the nation.”

Cardinal Turkson further elaborated on the importance of civic engagement, stating, “Living in a nation or state is the relational context in which we develop everything that we have. On occasions like July 1, we must recognise that everyone has a role to play. Nation-building is not the task of only leadership and government, but everybody.”

He urged Ghanaians to honour their civic responsibilities from daily acts of integrity to participating responsibly in elections, choosing leaders who reflect their values and aspirations.

These comments followed his national address on July 1, during the National Day of Prayer organised by President John Dramani Mahama to promote unity, peace, and hope amidst socio-economic challenges.

The event featured Christian prayers on the forecourt of the State House and Islamic prayers at the National Mosque, with participation from religious leaders, politicians, and civil society.

Cardinal Turkson’s message serves as a reminder that although leadership guides the country, true development depends on the active involvement of all citizens.
