SINCE it was established 25 years ago, Ghana’s National Theatre, which has hosted every event imaginable, has not seen any significant changes but now it is undergoing a facelift not only in terms of renovations in the auditorium but it is also looking at changing its logo.

The search for the new logo has led to the initiation of the “New Logo” competition which is offering creative designers between the ages of 18-35 years the opportunity to create an official logo for the Theatre.

The competition was launched at the VIP lounge of the National Theatre in Accra on Monday and in her speech, Executive Director, Mrs Amy Appiah, said the Theatre is mandated to ensure the promotion and development of the performing arts in Ghana.

She said that the Theatre’s role has however been limited to just a building and that is the perception they hope to erase with an official logo which will not just define the Theatre’s role but symbolise what it stands for.

“People associate the National Theatre to just the building and as the strategic planning process of rebranding the National Theatre at 25 comes to an end, we are interested in developing a new logo that represents the body and take the focus off the building.

“We believe that although the building is in Accra, every citizen in Ghana regardless of geographic location should have access to the content produced in the building and it has to be of high artistic quality,” she stated.

The Board Chairman of the National Theatre, Nana Fredua Agyeman Ofori Atta urged the youth to participate in the competition which will be a test of their creative skills.

“It is the Theatre’s hope that this competition will connect us with the youth and we encourage all Ghanaian youth to participate so that the lucky winner will be linked to the future of the National Theatre. As such, we are looking for a design that captures the essence of the National Theatre,” he said.

Submission of entries for the competition started on Monday, December 18 and the selection process will continue until January 21, 2019 when the winner is announced with the logo being unveiled a week after.

The winner is expected to receive GH¢5,000 with the top five entrants getting GH¢1,000 each. All participants will receive a certificate.
