National Chairman of the Opposition National democratic Congress (NDC), Elder Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has been released by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo was freed on Tuesday night he was detained for five hours following his arrest.

A statement from the police said: “The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating various acts of kidnapping and causing unlawful damage in which credible and actionable intelligence makes Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a suspect.”

An arrest warrant was issued early this week following Mr Ampofo's refusal to honour an invitation to report to the Director General of the CID, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, to assist in investigations into the recent spate of kidnappings and arson in the country.

According to the correspondence inviting him, a suspect accused him of being behind the criminalities, a situation which informed the police to invite him to assist with their investigations.

Meanwhile, all his electronic gadgets have been confiscated by the police.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo is to report back to the CID on Thursday, 13 June 2019.
