Former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) boss, Kojo Bonsu, says it’s time for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to move on from electing only Ewes and Northerners into leadership positions.

According to him, no Ashanti has ever occupied the position of Chairman or Presidential aspirant in the party and that must change.

Speaking on Metro TV’s ‘Good Evening Ghana’ show, the NDC flagbearer hopeful said the time is right for Ashantis to also take prominent positions in the NDC.

“I don’t want to make NDC an Ayigbe or Northern party… the leadership position has never been taken by an Ashanti before. Not chairman, not president,” the former Kumasi Mayor said.

Last week, Mr. Bonsu, picked up forms and officially filed his candidature to contest the 2020 presidential election on the ticket of the NDC.

His comments, though, have attracted a barrage of criticism from some party faithful, who believe he is playing the tribal card.

However, Mr. Bonsu took strong exception to claims that he is trying to use tribal lines as an advantage in his campaign.

In a separate interview with Accra-based Starr FM, he said he is not destructed by the criticisms and believes the delegates are the right people to judge him.

“I’m not playing the card of being from Ashanti or an Ashanti, I’m here because of the democracy in the party and so the delegates will decide,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, more than 10 persons have so far confirmed that they will contest the flagbearership of the NDC.

They are former president John Mahama, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbah, a former Trades and Industry Minister; Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi, and Member of Parliament for Nadowli-Kaleo, Alban Bagbin.
