A flagbearer hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has said delegates of the party want a personality whose integrity is intact.

According to the Former Trades Minister, the NDC must elect a flagbearer who does not have the tendency of being called corrupt or incompetent.

Speaking on Accra based radio station, 3FM, Dr. Spio-Garbrah stated delegates are willing to vote for someone they are sure can battle the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 general elections.

He said; “…it is time to get fresh, re-energized blood into the system for a new and improved NDC; people who can be sent to the battlefield, and in the case of the flagbearer, a person who cannot be accused by the NPP of being corrupt or incompetent, which were the two main charges that the NPP leveled against us,”.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah, who is one of the eleven people who have so far declared to contest the flagbearership race, observed there is a changed mindset amongst the delegates, in terms of those they elect to be at the helm of affairs of the NDC.

Former President John Dramani Mahama who has been tagged as Incompetent and corrupt by members of the NPP has been tipped as favourite by many political commentators to win the flagbearership race of the NDC.

Mr Mahama, through Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, former Ambassador to the United States, presented his official letter of intent to run for the flag bearer slot, to the party’s Adabraka headquarters on Thursday, 23 August 2018.

His letter of intent was presented on his behalf by a group of party heavy weights including former ministers of state like Inusah Fuseini and Sherry Ayitey.

Mr. Mahama joins a lineup of aspirants which includes the Nadowli Kaleo MP, Alban Bagbin, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Sylvester Mensah, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah; a former Trade and Industry Minister; Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof. Joshua Alabi and Cape Coast South MP, and Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Stephen Atubiga who have declared their intent to contest for the slot.

Meanwhile, the NDC has slated December 7, 2018, for the election of its flagbearer for the 2020 presidential election.
