The Minority in Parliament has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of prioritising rebranding over the introduction of sound and innovative economic policies, following reports of a $214 million loss under the Bank of Ghana’s Gold-for-Reserves programme.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, December 29, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the government has demonstrated neither originality nor competence in managing the economy.

He alleged that the administration has largely focused on renaming and repackaging existing initiatives while withholding critical information, only releasing details after pressure from the Minority.

“The truth about this government is that they have not introduced any superior economic ideas. All they have been doing is rebranding, renaming old things, and sometimes even hiding the details until we, the Minority, bring them to the public’s attention,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

He cautioned that rebranding without addressing underlying structural challenges could have serious consequences for the economy.

“Today they are relying on this rebranding. But rebranding without the requisite competence and attention to structural issues will be disastrous. When the IMF leaves by mid-2026 and they have finished repackaging inherited ideas, which new ideas will they introduce?" he questioned.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah further accused the government of relying heavily on policy frameworks initiated by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, including the Gold-for-Reserves, Gold-for-Oil and Gold-for-Forex programmes.

He said the reported losses under these initiatives would ultimately be borne by taxpayers.
