A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Francis Blebu, has argued that Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah is better placed to win votes for the party in the 2020 elections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Blebu called on the delegates to elect Dr. Spio-Gabrah as the flagbearer of the party.

According to him, although former president Mahama has a huge support base in the party, Dr. Spio-Gabrah wields the needed tenacity the NDC needs to face President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections.

“So far, the supporters of former president Mahama, who unfortunately have proven to be in the majority within the national leadership of the party, have managed to create the impression that he is the most popular among all the candidates vying for the 2020 presidential ticket,” he said.

He went ahead to raise doubts about that assertion, and wondered if Mahama has the same level of popularity at the national level.

In that regard, he went on, the NDC will be doing itself more harm than good if it settles on Mahama as flagbearer.

Blebu further stated that Dr. Spio-Gabrah has a nationwide appeal, and will easily deliver the Central Region to the NDC, as it contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2016 elections.

Giving an instance, he indicated that Dr. Spio-Gabrah’s reference to President Akufo-Addo as a one-term president, did not elicit a response from the NPP, because they have nothing on him.
