Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed deep disappointment over the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Labeling the situation an "embarrassment," Mahama reflected on the team's historic achievements and criticized their current state during his campaign tour in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The four-time AFCON champions ended the qualifiers at the bottom of Group F, managing only three points from three draws and three losses, including a 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final match at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This marks the first time since 2004 that Ghana will not feature in the continental tournament, breaking a 20-year streak of participation.

Mahama lamented the decline in Ghanaian football, saying:
“Everything has broken down. Even the Black Stars, which gives us joy, have been torn to shreds. It’s an embarrassment for us.”

Despite the absence of an AFCON title since 1982, Mahama highlighted Ghana’s previous consistency in reaching finals and delivering memorable performances.

He called for introspection and improvements to restore the nation’s footballing pride.

As Ghana reels from this setback, attention now shifts to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next year, where the Black Stars will aim for redemption.

Meanwhile, Mahama continues his campaign for the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections, intertwining his political agenda with calls for better management of national institutions, including football.
