American rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has criticised what he described as misleading Western portrayals of Nigeria, dismissing claims that the country is unsafe.

The hip-hop artiste, who is currently on holiday in Lagos, said Nigeria is far less dangerous than often portrayed in Western media and argued that insecurity in the country is exaggerated when compared to the United States.

In a video shared online, DDG said he considers the United States more dangerous, citing the prevalence of gun violence and gang-related crimes. He noted that while Nigeria faces security challenges, such forms of violence are not as widespread as in America.
“I honestly think America is the most dangerous country. I don’t think Nigeria is as dangerous as America – nowhere near. No doubt, there is insecurity in Nigeria. But gun violence and gangsterism is not common in Nigeria as in America. So, if anybody is thinking about coming to Nigeria, pull up," he said.

He encouraged foreigners to visit Nigeria and experience the country firsthand rather than relying on negative narratives.

DDG also disclosed that before his visit, he had been warned against consuming Nigerian food and advised to boil water before drinking. However, he said his experience contradicted those claims, describing Nigerian cuisine as healthy and praising jollof rice in particular.
