The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has warned that all public sector workers who do not have biometric SSNIT cards will not be paid and squashed off the government payroll.

The caution came during the first budget reading of the new Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in Parliament House.

"Starting April, all workers who are not biometrically registered with SSNIT will be taken off government payroll," he said.

‘Ghost names’, a phenomenon across Africa sees the creation of bank accounts for non-existent workers by unscrupulous public sector workers and their addition to government payroll into which salaries are received monthly.

The biometric registration was instituted in a bid to remove ‘ghost names’ from the public payroll. In 2014, the deputy minister of finance, Mona Quartey announced that the government has reduced the wage bill by 13 percent because it had cleared hundreds of non-existing workers from the payroll.
