The Electoral Commission (EC) has directed delegates and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to refrain from wearing campaign-branded clothing linked to any presidential aspirant during the party’s primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The Deputy Director of Research at the EC, Fred Tetteh, issued the caution on JoyNews’ The Pulse, stressing that displaying candidate-specific items such as T-shirts, caps, or other branded apparel at polling centres violates electoral regulations.
“On election day, you may wear NPP colours, but you must not appear in clothing or accessories associated with any of the five aspirants. Doing so constitutes an offence under the guidelines,” he stated.
The contest will see five prominent party figures battle for the NPP flagbearer slot — former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong, and former party General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.
A total of 211,849 delegates are expected to vote at 333 polling stations across all 276 constituencies nationwide.
Voting is set to begin at 7:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m.
Mr Tetteh further reminded aspirants and supporters that active campaigning is prohibited both on the eve of the election and on voting day itself.
“We do not expect rallies or mass mobilisation today or tomorrow. However, limited engagement such as house-to-house interactions remains permissible within the law,” he explained.
The EC’s directive forms part of measures to ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible internal election as the NPP selects its presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections.
