Theophilus Thompson, a known sympathiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been remanded into custody after pleading not guilty to charges of assaulting journalist Latif Iddrisu of the Multimedia Group.
The alleged incident occurred on May 27, 2025, around 7:00 p.m., during a protest in front of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
The demonstration, led by some Members of Parliament and NPP supporters was sparked by the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In a statement issued on June 8, the police confirmed Thompson’s arrest in James Town on Saturday, June 7, at approximately 5:00 p.m.
Appearing in court on Monday, June 9, Thompson denied the assault charges.
His lawyer argued for bail, stating that the 55-year-old has a fixed address and is not a flight risk.
Citing Section 97(4) of Act 30, the defence maintained that bail should not be denied as a punitive measure.
However, the State Attorney opposed the bail request, arguing that the investigation is still ongoing and that other suspects remain at large. She warned that releasing the accused could jeopardize evidence collection or result in witness interference.
The defence countered that the prosecution had offered no concrete evidence to support such claims.
The court ultimately denied bail and remanded Thompson into custody.
The hearing drew significant attention, with several senior NPP figures including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) and National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha present in court to show support for Thompson.
The case has been adjourned to June 18, 2025.
