Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has disclosed that senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are preparing to meet President John  Mahama to offer a formal apology on behalf of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial offences, including money laundering and fraud.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, June 10, Dr. Ayew Afriyie suggested that the legal action against Wontumi may be politically influenced, implying President Mahama’s involvement.

“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg. The hand behind this is bigger than the people who run the EOCO and the intelligence agencies. I will put it at the doorstep of President Mahama. Wontumi went overboard in some of his videos. And I played a lot of them to show him on June 9. I told him we will go and beg, if we have to kneel down in front of President Mahama, and we will tell him that for these videos, he [Wontumi] crossed the line,” he stated.

Dr. Afriyie acknowledged that Chairman Wontumi’s comments made in widely circulated videos prior to the 2024 general elections were inappropriate and personally targeted.

However, he revealed that Chairman Wontumi has agreed to apologise.

While maintaining that political rivalry is part of democratic discourse, Dr. Afriyie stressed that personal attacks based on falsehoods are unacceptable and urged humility from the NPP leadership in resolving the issue.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail by EOCO on Wednesday, May 28, after being arrested on charges of money laundering and fraud. His legal team, led by MP and lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, met the bail conditions including two justified sureties by Friday, May 30.

However, his release was delayed due to a motion filed at the High Court seeking a review of his GH¢50 million bail, which his lawyers later said was filed without his explicit approval.

The motion, scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3, was withdrawn a day earlier, clearing the way for his eventual release.
