NPP’s “Papa Rich” Walks Free After NSB Detention after uproar

Radio host and NPP communications officer Richard Nana Basoah — better known on air as “Papa Rich” — is back home after being released from National Signals Bureau custody, bringing a tense few days to a close for his station and supporters.

The Ahwenepa 95.5 FM drive-time host was picked up on Tuesday, August 4, right after wrapping his show at the station’s Juaso premises in the Asante Akim South Municipality.

Witnesses say a group of armed men rolled up in two black Toyota Land Cruisers and took him away — men later confirmed to be NSB operatives.

News of the arrest set off alarm bells almost immediately, with party supporters, fellow journalists and other stakeholders demanding answers about why he’d been picked up and where he’d been taken.

Basoah’s release didn’t happen on its own. It came only after a concerted push from NPP leadership, his lawyers and a handful of well-placed individuals who stepped in to press the authorities for due process.

Among those who worked behind the scenes: Ahwenepa FM directors Prof. Ken Attafuah and Joyce Attafuah, former Ghana Post boss Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour), and lawyer Enoch Afoakwa.

The matter isn’t fully closed, though. According to a statement from the station, Basoah has been told to report back to the National Signals Bureau on Thursday, August 6, with his legal team in tow, as the process continues.

Ahwenepa FM’s management used the moment to thank everyone who rallied behind Basoah — supporters, party members, colleagues, family and the wider public — for their prayers and solidarity throughout the ordeal, promising to share more details as they become available.
