The National Sports Authority (NSA) Ashanti Region has responded to public criticism regarding its decision to rent out the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for a church event, which has reportedly caused damage to the pitch.

The stadium is currently Ghana's sole CAF-approved venue for international matches, making its upkeep crucial.

The decision to host a five-day church event at the stadium has sparked outrage among sports fans, who are concerned that the event could compromise the pitch’s condition.

Images circulating on social media show potential damage caused by the event, raising fears that Ghana's CAF license could be jeopardized, especially with two upcoming international games.

In response, the NSA Ashanti Region has reassured the public that the pitch will be restored in time for future events.

"We have a robust plan and a skilled field maintenance team in place to recover the pitch and restore the facility promptly throughout August. Stakeholders can be assured that the stadium will be in excellent condition," the NSA Ashanti Region stated in a post.

This situation has highlighted the broader issue of inadequate sports facilities in Ghana. Recently, Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey made a public appeal to Vice President Dr. Bawumia, urging for improvements to the stadium to enhance the quality of football in the country.

Partey emphasized, "We want to say thank you for coming, we really appreciate it. I have one request from all the players: we are asking for a good stadium because we want to play better football. It’s the only time we can see you for now, so I need to say it."

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Angola in an upcoming African qualifier next month, and Ghanaian clubs Samartex and Nsoatreman are set to compete in CAF Inter-club competitions.

Ensuring the stadium's readiness is crucial for these high-profile matches and competitions.
