Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has announced that steps are being taken to acquire pitch covers for Ghana’s major stadiums, in a bid to halt the deterioration of playing surfaces and restore the country’s sports infrastructure to acceptable standards.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged that the absence of pitch covers had contributed to the poor condition of several national venues, many of which have been deemed unfit to host matches due to neglect and inadequate maintenance.
“We are in the process of acquiring pitch covers for our stadia,” he said. “In the past, maybe it was an oversight, and that is why we don't have some at the moment, but for now, we are making arrangements to get some.”
Ampofo Ankrah emphasized that the move is not cosmetic but structural, aimed at preserving pitch quality, especially during Ghana’s rainy seasons and high-usage periods.
“We don't want our pitches to deteriorate, as we witnessed in the past,” he added.
The announcement comes amid broader conversations around stadium refurbishment, with Sports Minister Kofi Adams also pledging deep upgrades and new builds in underserved regions.
