Egyptian international Omar Marmoush has been ruled out of Manchester City’s high-stakes clash against rivals Manchester United on Sunday after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty.
The 25-year-old attacker, who joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January, was forced off just 10 minutes into Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Tuesday. He was replaced by youngster Osama Faisal as the game ended in a tense 0-0 draw.
Marmoush will return to Manchester for further assessment before beginning rehabilitation, with early reports suggesting he could be sidelined for several weeks.
The injury is a major blow for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have endured a shaky start to their Premier League campaign — winning just once and suffering two defeats in their opening three matches. Marmoush had been tipped to play a key role in the derby, adding pace and directness to City’s attack.
On the international front, Egypt remain in a commanding position in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, sitting top with 20 points after eight matches. The Pharaohs will resume their qualification campaign in October.
