Ghanaian forward Joseph Opoku has said he was taken aback by the level of criticism he received online, before responding in emphatic fashion with a decisive performance to help Zulte Waregem in their fight for survival.
The 20-year-old winger endured a difficult week after missing a high-profile chance against Cercle Brugge, which triggered a wave of criticism on social media.
Opoku admitted the reaction surprised him, describing it as an early test of his resilience as a professional footballer.
“I was shocked by how they reacted to me,” he said. “Many people make fun of it, but as a top player, you know, I already knew I’m a top player.”
Rather than allowing the backlash to affect his form, the Ghana Under-20 international delivered a timely response on the pitch.
He scored twice in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory over FCV Dender, a result that lifted Zulte Waregem to the top of the relegation play-off standings.
The goals not only proved decisive in the club’s battle to remain in the Belgian top flight, but also helped shift the narrative around the young forward.
Reflecting on the episode, Opoku highlighted the importance of mental strength in modern football, where scrutiny from supporters can be immediate and intense.
“So, as a top player, it keeps you going,” he added. “I gave them feedback, so they have to react to this one too.”
Since joining from Great Corinthians, Opoku has emerged as a key figure for Zulte Waregem. He has now registered seven goals and five assists this season, underlining his importance during a critical phase of the campaign.
