The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the Acting IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh, would not have the free-hand to operate effectively in his new office.

According to Nketia, the acting IGP was an undisputed professional police officer with high integrity, but was quick to add that he won’t be different from his predecessor, David Asante-Apeatu who was incapacitated at the long-run because of political control from the Akufo-Addo government.

He made this known while speaking on Kasapa FM's morning show, Anopa Kasapa.

“The political machinations has been the problem of our professional Policemen to work effectively. The way I know Oppong-Boanuh if he set himself to work very well, he can but I doubt it because I can predict that what Appietu went through he would suffer the same thing,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has asked the Deputy Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, to act as IGP until a substantive one is appointed.

IGP David Asante-Apeatu was on Monday, 22 July 2019, relieved of his post as he was asked to proceed on leave.

Asante-Apeatu has proceeded on leave with immediate effect, pending his retirement from the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, 14th August, 2019.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has indicated his readiness to serve as the NDC’s running mate in the upcoming 2020 elections.

According to him, though he is the General Secretary of the party, he is equally capable of taking up any position including that of Vice President when asked.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he explained that he has been on the floor in the various regions meeting party members for their upcoming primaries and their policies as a party going into 2020 elections.
