Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has acknowledged his side’s tactical shortcomings in their 1-0 defeat to South Korea, concluding Ghana’s Asian tour with back-to-back losses in the November international window.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Addo pointed to Ghana’s inefficiency in front of goal and difficulties executing a coordinated high press — particularly against a well-drilled Korean side.
“Except the Brazil game (where South Korea lost 5-0), I think they don’t concede so many goals anymore, and they are very compact,” Addo noted.
He highlighted South Korea’s tactical evolution since their last meeting at the 2022 World Cup, emphasizing their use of a back three and overloads on one flank — a setup that disrupted Ghana’s pressing structure.
“They always try to overload one side, which makes it sometimes difficult to press if you don’t have the right timing to take the right positions,” he explained. “We had problems sometimes, especially in the first half, when to press, who should press. The timing was not there.”
Addo also acknowledged the challenge of building cohesion with a squad that has not played together consistently, especially amid injuries to key players like Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Jordan Ayew.
Despite the defeat, the match offered valuable lessons as Ghana continues its preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
