Senior Education Advisor at Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), Dr. Peter Attafuah, has blamed the rising cases of indiscipline among Senior High School (SHS) students on the conduct and influence of some parents.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, May 30, Dr. Attafuah argued that the behaviour students exhibit in school is often a reflection of what they observe at home.

He stated that discipline must begin in the household, where children first learn values and social conduct.

“Parents in their homes must speak to their wards and demonstrate discipline themselves. They must refrain from insulting others in front of their children. That act is horrible. Most children learn their attitudes from home,” he said.

He described such verbal abuse as “horrible” and warned that negative parental conduct could erode efforts by teachers and school authorities to instill discipline.

Dr. Attafuah called for a collective response involving parents, teachers, and school administrators to tackle what he described as a growing discipline gap in schools.

“We are urging parents to conduct themselves properly in the presence of their children,” he said.

He concluded that while schools play a role in shaping student behaviour, the foundation must be laid at home, where values are first formed.
