Parliament adjourns sitting after sudden death of Akwatia MP

Parliament has adjourned its sitting until Tuesday, July 8, 2025, following the sudden passing of Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who died after a brief illness.

Although official details of his death have not been released, Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Kweku Asante reported that Kumi was in Parliament as recently as last week making the news of his passing particularly shocking to colleagues and constituents.

A prominent figure in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kumi earned respect across the House for his insightful contributions and dedication to national development and governance issues. His departure has been widely described as a significant loss to both Parliament and the NPP.

In a brief address on the floor, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to Mr. Kumi’s family, the people of Akwatia, and the NPP fraternity.

“The House is accordingly adjourned until Tuesday, 8th July 2025, at 2:00 in the afternoon,” he declared.

Tributes have come pouring in from MPs across all parties, with many commending Kumi’s humility, commitment to his constituents, and tireless service.

Mr. Kumi’s death follows an earlier legal ordeal.

In February 2025, after being found in contempt by the Koforidua High Court for defying an interim injunction related to the 2024 parliamentary election, the Supreme Court overturned the contempt ruling.

Just weeks later, his sudden passing has left many in deep mourning.
