A torrential downpour on Sunday afternoon, May 18, left large parts of Accra and the Tema West Municipality underwater, once again highlighting the capital city’s vulnerability to flash flooding during the rainy season.
The storm, which began around 3:00 p.m. and lasted close to three hours, caused widespread disruption. Major roads and entire neighborhoods in Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, New Legon, and Adjei-Kojo Kanewu were inundated, trapping commuters and flooding homes.

Among the most severely affected areas was the stretch from the Awudome Roundabout to the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, where floodwaters overwhelmed the road, bringing traffic to a halt.
Several vehicles broke down in the high water, while open drains and hidden potholes posed serious hazards.
In a display of community spirit, local youth were seen stepping in to help stranded drivers and guide vehicles away from danger zones.

Emergency response teams from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) were quickly deployed following a series of distress calls from residents.
