President John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline and creating a stable economic environment, while urging businesses to reduce prices of goods and services in line with the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
The President commended companies and organisations that have already adjusted their pricing to reflect improved exchange rates.
He gave special recognition to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for taking early action to ease the financial burden on the public.
Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit and Awards Expo at Kempinski, he said, "GPRTU, thank you very much. Those of you who haven’t responded yet, please pass on some of the cedi appreciation to Ghanaians."
"On the government’s part, I want to assure you that we will maintain the current fiscal discipline and work to maintain a conducive environment for your businesses to thrive."
President Mahama also applauded business leaders who have already responded to the cedi’s gains by reducing the cost of their products and services.
"Let me take the opportunity to commend those of you who have responded to the cedi’s appreciation by reducing prices of your products and services and thereby passing some of the relief from the hardship to Ghanaians."
His remarks come amid growing optimism about Ghana’s economic outlook, with the local currency steadily gaining against major international currencies in recent weeks which has attributed to renewed investor confidence and improved macroeconomic indicators.
The GPRTU’s decision to reduce transport fares has been widely praised as a tangible step toward easing cost-of-living pressures for the commuting public.
