A VIP bus traveling from Accra to Kumasi was completely consumed by fire late Saturday night after a loud explosion was heard from the rear of the vehicle, prompting panic among passengers.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred near Nsutam Junction in the Eastern Region, a section of the highway known for heavy night traffic.
Moments before the explosion, passengers reportedly noticed a strange burning smell and alerted the driver to stop.
“The driver quickly pulled over, and just as we were getting off, smoke started coming out from the back. Within minutes, the whole bus was on fire,” one passenger recounted.
Fortunately, all passengers managed to escape before the flames spread, and no injuries or deaths were recorded. However, luggage and personal belongings stored in the cargo compartment were completely destroyed.
Fire officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at Anyinam responded swiftly to the distress call and worked to douse the flames, but the bus was reduced to ashes before they could bring the fire under control.
