Paul Afoko pledges to rebuild NPP and return party to power in 2028

Awentami Paul Afoko has promised to rebuild the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and lead it back into government in 2028 if he is re-elected as the party’s National Chairman.

The former National Chairman said the NPP remained capable of regaining the confidence of Ghanaians and returning to political power, but insisted that victory would depend on unity, discipline and a comprehensive renewal of the party’s structures.

Speaking on the Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi with Sir John on Thursday, 6 August 2026, Mr Afoko said the rebuilding process would have to begin at grassroots level and extend through to the national leadership.

He said his decision to seek the chairmanship again followed several months of consultations with party elders, former and serving national executives, Members of Parliament, regional officials and representatives of youth, women and grassroots groups across the country.

According to Mr Afoko, those discussions highlighted broad concern about the current condition of the NPP. However, he said they also showed that many party members remained confident the organisation could overcome its difficulties and emerge stronger with decisive leadership.

His campaign, he said, would be built around the “Three Rs” Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture.

Mr Afoko explained that the first priority would be to reunite the party by addressing internal divisions, restoring trust between members and creating a more inclusive political environment. He said greater cohesion would be essential if the NPP was to prepare effectively for future elections.

The rebuilding agenda would focus on improving the party’s structures at every level, giving grassroots members a stronger role and ensuring that all party organs operated effectively, he added.

Mr Afoko said those steps would help the NPP recapture political power by restoring public confidence and presenting the party as a united, disciplined and credible alternative to govern Ghana once again.

He expressed confidence that the NPP would become more cohesive and resilient under his leadership, putting it in a stronger position to reclaim power at the next general election.

The aspiring National Chairman appealed to delegates to support his candidature. He promised to provide transparent, inclusive and selfless leadership, with the interests of the party placed above personal ambitions.

He also called on NPP members to renew their commitment to sacrifice and service, saying the party’s future would depend on the willingness of its supporters and leaders to work for a common purpose.

Mr Afoko stressed that unity was the surest route to restoring the NPP’s fortunes and enabling it to return to government.

The NPP is seeking to rebuild its organisation and public support as it looks ahead to the 2028 general election. Mr Afoko said that process would require cooperation across all sections of the party, from the grassroots to the national level.
