Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokonor says the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is behind the arrest of his driver on allegations he is involved in the recent fire outbreaks in markets.

He said the arrest is to divert attention from the NDC’s protests happening across the country to challenge the 2020 election results.

Mr. Otokonor’s driver, Eric Adogla was arrested up on Monday, December 21, 2020, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with the recent market fires according to the security agency.

Mr. Adogla was however released today, Tuesday, December 22, 2020.

But Mr. Boamah in a Citi News interview said the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) planned the arrest which some members of the NDC have described as illegal.

“The NPP arrested my driver to divert attention from the critical issues of our resistance. They want the critical issue of our protest and the critical issue of our fight to protect democracy and the sovereignty of this country to be ignored. They did not find anything on him and no charges have been leveled against him. I think that this is one of the few things the NPP are doing to divert attention,” Otokunor said.

He however accused the NPP is being behind the recent market fires as a way of courting public disquiet for the NDC.

“I heard the General Secretary of the NPP issue a frivolous and childish statement that the NDC that our party is involved in fires. They know what exactly they are doing. They are using that to create some form of public disquiet and public dislike for the NDC and that has certainly failed. We would not go that low,” Otokunor added.
