The Ghana National Fire Service is in the process of shutting down a Goil Fuel Filling station at Akyem Kukurantumi in the Eastern region over underground leakage .
The underground fuel leakage has polluted two wells near the Filling station creating inconvenience for the residents.
The Problem is reported to have existed for over a month. Despite the fuel floating on the surface of water in the well, residents fetch the water for domestic use including cooking and extraction of Palm oil.
The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO1 Mr. Samuel Mantey tells Kasapa News Eastern regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah, that after initial investigations on Thursday, it has been established that the leakage may be from the underground fuel tank hence the Ghana National Fire Service is in the process of closing down the Filing station.
As a result, Management of the Filling station has been directed to sell the existing fuel in tank for it to be empty for a shut down to allow further probe of the underground tank for the problem to fixed before allowed to re – operate
According to him, in the interim, foam has been applied to the wells containing the fuel chemical substance and have been closed.
He added that, Fire personnel have been deployed to the Filling station to monitor the situation until the Tank is emptied.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Ghana National Fire Service has organized training for operators of Fuel Filling and Gas Filling stations in the region on safety .
