Hundreds of Ghanaians thronged the Accra International Conference Centre, (AICC) to pay their last respect to the late former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan on Tuesday, September 11.

Staff of United Nations agencies in Ghana and prominent individuals and general public took advantage of the opportunity available to honour him for the last time as he takes his final journey home.

Dignitaries including recognised groups, chiefs, Members of Parliament and Ministers of State, world leaders will on Wednesday, September 12 pay their last respects to the former UN Leader.

The burial service will be held on Thursday, September 13 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This will be followed by a private burial at the new military cemetery with full military honours and a 17-gun salute.

The body of the late Ghanaian diplomat arrived in Ghana on Monday, September 10, 2018 from Switzerland where he died in August for a state burial and funeral service.

President Akufo Addo and other top senior government officials were at the Kotoka International Airport to receive the remains.

Mr. Annan was the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations.

He was appointed as the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996 by the Security Council, and later confirmed by the General Assembly, making him the first office holder to be elected from the UN staff itself.

He was re-elected for a second term in 2001, and was succeeded as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007.
