The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Samson Asaki Awingobit, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to reconsider its decision to disqualify the party from the upcoming December 2024 presidential elections.

The PNC’s flagbearer, Bernard Mornah, was among 11 presidential aspirants disqualified due to errors in their nomination forms, including incomplete supporter details and using registered voters from one district to support nominations in other districts which are among violations of electoral rules.

Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on October 1, where the EC acknowledged ongoing efforts to correct errors in the voters register, Mr Awingobit expressed disappointment that the PNC’s Presidential Candidate was disqualified over ‘errors.’

He argued that human errors are inevitable, noting that just as the EC is working to fix issues with the voter register, political parties, as human institutions, are also prone to mistakes.

He urged the EC not to disqualify the PNC’s candidate based on these errors.

Mr Awingobit also commended the EC for televising the IPAC meeting to ensure transparency and praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for advocating this initiative.

Meanwhile, Bernard Mornah has filed a lawsuit against the EC, claiming his disqualification was unlawful and violated his rights.

He is seeking a court order to compel the EC to reinstate him as a presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has similarly taken legal action against the EC after being disqualified from the race.
