A high-impact police operation at ‘Thinka Island’, a known hotspot for illicit drug activities in the heart of Kumasi, has led to the arrest of 34 suspects and the seizure of large quantities of substances believed to be illegal drugs.

The operation, described by the police as “very successful,” was conducted following a directive from the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, who ordered a crackdown on drug peddling and usage in the area.

Speaking to the media, DSP Godwin Ahianyo of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit said the raid was part of a broader strategy to combat the growing threat of drug-related crimes in the region.

“The arrest of 34 suspects and the seizure of various suspected illegal substances demonstrate our resolve to ensure public safety,” DSP Ahianyo stated.

While the exact date of the operation and the names of the suspects were not disclosed—reportedly for security reasons—DSP Ahianyo assured the public that the retrieved exhibits are being processed for forensic analysis, and those found culpable will be prosecuted according to the law.

He praised the Regional Operations Team and the Drug Law Enforcement Unit for their professionalism and swift execution of the operation, emphasizing that this is only the beginning of a sustained offensive against drug networks in the city.

“The swoop at Thinka Island will not be a nine-day wonder. Similar operations will continue across the region as we work tirelessly to dismantle drug networks and restore peace in our communities,” he said.

DSP Ahianyo concluded by reaffirming the Ashanti Regional Police Command’s commitment to the ongoing fight against drug-related crime and the protection of lives and property.

“We want to send a clear message to all drug peddlers and users: your days are numbered. We will not relent until our communities are safe and free from the scourge of drugs,” he added.
