A suspected armed robber has been killed following a fierce exchange of gunfire with police at Dormaa-Gonokrom, a border town in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred last Thursday during an intelligence-driven operation by the Ghana Police Service targeting robbery syndicates believed to be operating along the Dormaa-Gonokrom highway.
Briefing the media, the Bono Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joshua Copposon, disclosed that officers acted on intelligence indicating that a criminal gang was planning to attack traders using the stretch of road on February 11, 2026.
In the early hours of February 12, police personnel moved in on a suspiciously parked motorbike in a bushy area near the highway. As officers advanced, they were met with sudden gunfire from the surrounding bushes. Police returned fire, overpowering the armed suspects.
A search of the area after the exchange revealed the body of one male suspect, with an AK-47 rifle found beside him. Further sweeps of the bushes led to the discovery of a sack containing additional weapons, ammunition and other items.
Recovered exhibits included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action shotgun, a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition, 34 additional 9mm rounds, an AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds, 10 extra rounds of ammunition, 39 BB cartridges, a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black face mask and a set of talismans.
DCOP Copposon said the deceased’s body has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
He described the operation as a major breakthrough in the regional command’s sustained fight against armed robbery and organised crime, adding that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest other members of the gang who managed to escape.
The Regional Commander appealed to the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in the fight against crime.
