Police officer promoted after rescuing victims from Aboso fire

Inspector Hance Atubra has been promoted to the rank of Chief Inspector after risking his life to rescue people trapped during a fire at Aboso Main Lorry Station in Ghana’s Western Region.

The promotion was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, in recognition of Inspector Atubra’s bravery and his efforts to protect lives during the emergency.

The fire broke out on Wednesday, 26 August, at the Aboso Main Lorry Station, where several shops were engulfed by flames. The incident caused significant damage to property, although Inspector Atubra’s actions were credited with helping to prevent further loss of life.

Inspector Atubra, who is based at the Tarkwa Divisional Headquarters, was reportedly the first police officer to arrive at the scene. As the fire spread through the affected area, he moved quickly to assist people who were trapped or struggling to escape.

He helped evacuate those in danger and directed them towards safety despite the risks created by the flames. His immediate response focused on removing people from the danger zone before the situation could worsen.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly praised the officer for his courage and prompt intervention. His conduct later resulted in a recommendation that he be promoted for what was described as an exemplary performance and a strong commitment to protecting lives and property.

The recommendation was approved by the IGP, elevating Inspector Atubra from Inspector to Chief Inspector.

The fire affected several shops around the Aboso Main Lorry Station and resulted in considerable property damage. The exact extent of the losses was not stated.

Inspector Atubra’s promotion follows the police service’s recognition of the role he played during the incident, particularly his decision to prioritise the evacuation of people caught in the affected area while the fire continued to spread.
