The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the three police officers involved in an alleged assault on Ghanaian Times journalists have been interdicted.

A statement signed by the Director-General of Public Affairs of the Police, ACP David Eklu identified the culprits as Inspector Isaac Opare, Sergeant. Ebenezer Akrofi and Lance Corporal Evans Kofi Ntim.

Last Thursday, March 14, 2019 some police officers brutally assaulted three journalists of the Ghanaian Times newspaper.

The journalists were reportedly assaulted by the policemen while on their way for an assignment.

The assaulted journalists were identified as Malik Sullemana, a court reporter, Raissa Sambou, a general reporter and Salifu Abdul Rahman, an assistant editor.

Reports suggest one of the police officers who was using an unregistered motorcycle hit the car transporting the Ghanaian Times journalists.

The said officer is reported to have ignored the accident and went further to skip traffic.

The journalists then tried to record the ensuing exchanges, but their action irked the police officers who pounced on them and physically assaulted them.

“The Inspector General of Police has directed the immediate interdiction of the undermentioned police officers for their involvement in an alleged assault of journalists from Ghanaian Times on 14th March, 2019 in Accra,” a statement from the Police reads.

“The Inspector General of Police has further directed the Accra Regional Crime Officer to take over the investigation of the case from Ministries Police Station.

“He has also instructed the Accra Central Motor Traffic Unit to take over the Motor Traffic Accident aspect of the case. Both are to submit their reports in one week,” it added.

The National Media Commission as well as the Ghana Journalists Association described the incident “barbaric” and demanded swift investigations from the Police Administration and the errant officers punished.
