Police in the Assin North District of the Central Region have rescued a young man from an enraged crowd after he was allegedly attacked by residents over an attempted assault on a cocoa farmer.

The incident occurred at Assin Yaw Attah on Thursday, where the suspect, believed to be in his early twenties, allegedly entered a cocoa farm without permission and attempted to assault a 19-year-old farmer, identified only as Baba, using a stick.

According to eyewitnesses, the farmer’s cries for help drew residents to the scene, where the suspect was overpowered, tied to a pole and severely beaten by the angry crowd.

The assault was halted after a respected community leader intervened, allowing officers from the Assin Breku Police Station to step in and rescue the suspect before the situation escalated further.

He was rushed to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the mob attack.

Commenting on the incident, the Assin North District Police Commander, Superintendent Eric Yao Avudzi, condemned the increasing incidents of mob justice in the area, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.

He noted that the district has recorded similar cases in the past, including one in which a suspect was allegedly beaten to death before the crowd attempted to burn the body.

Superintendent Avudzi urged the public to hand suspected offenders over to the police for lawful investigation and prosecution rather than resorting to violence.

“We are appealing to the public to allow the law to take its course. Suspected criminals should be handed over to the police rather than being subjected to mob justice,” he stated.

Meanwhile, police say preliminary interactions with the suspect have raised concerns about his mental health.

Investigators disclosed that the suspect gave inconsistent responses during questioning, while residents informed officers they had recently seen him wandering through the community and exhibiting behaviour suggesting possible mental instability.

Police have launched investigations into both the alleged attempted assault on the farmer and the subsequent mob attack.

Authorities are also working to establish the suspect’s identity, trace his family members and identify those who participated in the assault.
