Peace has returned to Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region following violent clashes between youth groups on Thursday, May 22, which left parts of the community in turmoil.

According to the Eastern South Regional Police Command, approximately 300 young people took to the streets, blocking roads, burning tyres, and vandalising shops and vehicles in protest.

In response, a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters and the National Formed Police Unit was quickly deployed to the area.
“Calm has been restored at Adoagyiri following the disturbances,” the police said in a statement.

The unrest is believed to be linked to a fatal shooting that occurred on Monday, May 20, in which one person died and another was injured.

A subsequent reprisal attack left three more people injured, one of whom identified as Isaah Masawudu, later died in hospital.

News of Masawudu’s death triggered anger among youth in the Adoagyiri Zongo community, prompting the violent protests.

Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest all individuals involved and bring them to justice.
“Efforts are ongoing to get all those involved arrested to face the full rigours of the law. We urge everyone to remain calm as we continue to ensure law and order in Adoagyiri and the surrounding communities."
