The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assured delegates and the general public that the Ghana Police Service will take full charge of security during its presidential primary on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with military presence limited strictly to the Bawku area due to prevailing security concerns.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the party’s Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, said the Inspector-General of Police has given firm assurances that officers will be deployed across all voting centres nationwide to maintain peace and order.

He explained that police personnel will be stationed at polling locations, counting points and collation centres throughout the country to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“Across the country, the Ghana Police Service will be responsible for security at all voting centres. The only exception is Bawku, where the police themselves requested military reinforcement because of the security situation there,” Mr Nimako clarified.

According to him, the additional military deployment in Bawku is purely preventive and aimed at safeguarding delegates, electoral officials and party activities in an area known for periodic unrest.

Mr Nimako further revealed that the party has held extensive engagements with all presidential aspirants and their campaign teams to promote discipline, cooperation and peaceful conduct before, during and after the polls.

“We have met with all aspirants, and preparations are going very well. We are confident of a peaceful primary that will produce a strong flagbearer to lead us into victory in 2028,” he said.

He noted that the primaries will be conducted simultaneously across the country rather than at a central venue, making effective security coordination essential.

“This is a nationwide, decentralised exercise, and by the end of it, the NPP will come out more united and stronger,” he added.

The NPP presidential primary is expected to draw significant attention as the party selects its next flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections, with security agencies fully deployed to guarantee a calm, credible and orderly process — including targeted military support in Bawku.
