President Nana Akufo-Addo has praised Parliament’s Democracy Cup initiative as an outstanding effort to celebrate 30 years of parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic.
The inaugural Democracy Cup match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium. President Akufo-Addo's commendation came after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him in anticipation of the event.
Akufo-Addo lauded the initiative for its role in promoting democratic governance in Ghana.
“The commitment that you have made to use it as a vehicle for encouraging popular support for democratic governance in Ghana is an excellent initiative.
You are to be congratulated," President Akufo-Addo stated.
"But just merely to reiterate my wholehearted support for this initiative, my congratulations to you for thinking up the idea, and that it's an idea that should last forever and ever and ever. We pray to God that it will be so.”
The Democracy Cup match aims to celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey while fostering unity and engagement among citizens.
The event will feature a curtain-raiser game where Parliamentarians will face off against former Black Stars players, adding an exciting prelude to the main match.
