2020 Women's Olympic Football Tournament Qualifiers - Draw Mechanics
After 25 thrilling matches in the first round of the Qualifiers, 10 teams - Chinese Taipei, Islamic Republic of Iran, Myanmar, Jordan, Philippines, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Nepal and Palestine - will now join Uzbekistan and Vietnam in Round Two.
Round Two will see the teams divided into three groups of four teams, with the respective group winners advancing to the final round of the Qualifiers.
There, they will join Australia, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, China PR and Thailand in two groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the playoffs.
The two winners from the playoffs will then qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with hosts and reigning Asian champions Japan.
Here is a recap on how the 10 teams from Round One advanced:
Chinese Taipei were undoubtedly the best performing team in the first preliminary round in a five-team Group A. The East Asians registered a perfect run of four wins with 33 goals scored and none conceded.
Philippines suffered only one defeat - against Chinese Taipei - but performed well against their other Group A rivals to finish second in the group.
The three-team Group B saw a tight race between Iran and Hong Kong for the top spot, with the Central Asians emerging group winners on goal difference after both teams finished on four points.
In a tightly contested Group C, Myanmar came out on top unbeaten, followed by India in second place, a similar result to the 2016 Qualifiers Round One. Nepal also booked their place in Round Two as the best third-placed team.
Jordan repeated history by progressing to the second round as group winners with a perfect record, this time scoring 16 goals against their Group D opponents. Indonesia, who are making their debut in the Women’s Olympic Qualifiers, will continue their pursuit after finishing second ahead of Palestine on goal difference.
However, Palestine’s performance also earned them a place in the second round as one of the best third-placed teams.Source: the-afc.com
