The National Media Commission (NMC) has elected its first-ever female chairperson, Prof. Akua Biritwum, in its history since its establishment in 1993.
The election took place after the swearing-in of new members by a Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Noble Jerome Nkrumah, at the Supreme Court in Accra on May 28, 2025.
Prof. Biritwum, one of two representatives of the Office of the President on the NMC, will lead the 18-member Commission for a three-year term.
The NMC is a constitutional body established under Article 166 of the 1992 Constitution, comprising representatives from various institutions, including the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
The GJA is represented on the Commission by Vincent Kobby Asmah, a seasoned journalist with over three decades of experience, and Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary of the GJA and a media law lecturer.
Both representatives bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Commission.
Kobby Asmah, a former Editor of Graphic Communications Group Limited, has extensive experience in senior management and has written insightful articles on local and international relations.
He has received several awards, including the GJA Best Journalist in Political and Parliamentary Reporting Award and the GJA Outstanding Editor of the Year.
Kofi Yeboah, a multiple award-winning journalist, has practiced journalism for 30 years and has worked in various media platforms.
He is the author of the book "Perils & Pearls… Scribbles of a stammering scribe," an autobiography of his professional career.
The NMC plays a crucial role in promoting and regulating the media industry in Ghana. With Prof. Akua Biritwum at the helm, the Commission is expected to continue its work in ensuring a free and responsible media environment.
The other members of the NMC represent various institutions, including the Association of Private Broadcasters, Ghana Association of Writers, Publishers and Owners of the Private Press, and the Ghana Bar Association, among others.
The swearing-in of new members and the election of Prof. Biritwum as Chair mark a new chapter in the history of the NMC, and it is expected that the Commission will continue to work towards promoting a vibrant and responsible media industry in Ghana.
