The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs across all consumer categories, effective July 1, 2025. However, water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of the year.
The tariff review is part of PURC’s Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which evaluates critical economic indicators every three months to ensure fair pricing and sustainability in utility service delivery. These variables include the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, inflation, natural gas prices, and the energy generation mix between hydro and thermal sources.
Key Economic Indicators Behind the Review:
- Exchange rate: GHS10.3052 per US dollar
- Inflation: 20.67% (projected annual average)
- Natural gas price: USD7.7134 per MMBtu
- Hydro-Thermal mix: 28.8% hydro, 71.2% thermal
- Outstanding revenue: GHS488 million carried over from previous quarters
The PURC stated that these conditions directly influence the cost of power production and delivery, necessitating periodic adjustments to maintain the financial stability of utility providers and ensure reliable service to consumers.
New Electricity Tariffs (Effective July 1, 2025):
Category | Previous Tariff (GHp/kWh) | New Tariff (GHp/kWh) |
---|---|---|
Lifeline (0–30 kWh) | 77.6274 | 79.5308 |
Residential (301+ kWh) | 232.3892 | 238.0873 |
Non-residential (301+ kWh) | 197.3338 | 202.1723 |
High Voltage Mines | 495.9255 | 508.0854 |
Service charges remain unchanged across all categories.
Water Tariffs Remain Unchanged
The Commission chose to maintain current water rates for residential, non-residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional users. The decision, according to the PURC, reflects a sensitivity to consumer pressures while still aiming to maintain service quality.
PURC’s Assurance
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and value for money, stating that it will continue to monitor the efficiency and performance of utility companies.
“We thank stakeholders for their continued support and assure the public of our resolve to ensure value for money and improved service delivery,” the Commission said in its official release.
The full details of the tariff adjustments and explanations are available on the PURC’s official website and social media platforms.
