Ranking Member of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has alleged that former President John Dramani Mahama’s financial contribution to the Black Queens following their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign was less than $40,000.

The Black Queens made history by clinching bronze at the just-ended tournament in Morocco, their first medal finish at WAFCON since 2016.

In the aftermath of the team’s return to Ghana, the Minority Caucus in Parliament presented a cash donation of GHC100,000 to the players and technical team. Shortly after, both President Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, hosted the team, during which they also made a financial donation — though the exact figure was not publicly disclosed.

However, speaking on Asempa FM, the Member of Parliament for Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, cast doubt on the amount presented by Mahama, questioning the transparency of the gesture.

“I challenge President Mahama that the money he gave to the Black Queens is less than 40,000 dollars,” he claimed.

The GFA, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Parliament have all praised the Black Queens for their spirited performance in Morocco and have since called for greater investment in women’s football in Ghana.

Despite not winning the ultimate, the team’s strong showing has renewed public interest in the women’s game and sparked discussions about the level of support and resources available to female footballers.
