Road Ministry assures timely completion of Pokuase–Nsawam repairs

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured the public that repair works on the Pokuase–Nsawam road will be completed on schedule, following the return of contractors to the site after a prolonged suspension.
Construction had stalled for several months due to delayed payments, causing severe traffic congestion and frustration for daily commuters. However, the Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed that GH¢809 million was paid to the contractor on August 4, 2025, paving the way for work to resume.
The resumption comes just days before a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) was set to expire. The union had threatened to suspend transport operations along the corridor if work did not recommence.
Appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday, August 20, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, apologised to motorists for the extended inconvenience and explained the reasons behind the delay.
“I will first of all apologise to all motorists on that stretch. It is one of the potatoes that we inherited at the ministry. By the time we got to the ministry, the contractor, like many other contractors across the country, had already abandoned the site due to non-payment, and we have been working with the Finance Minister to ensure that we get some releases to these contractors so they can go back to the site.
Mr. Suhuyini confirmed that the contractor is now fully mobilised and has resumed work.
“This contractor, as we speak, has received some payment and has adequately mobilised back to the site. It is not going to be a nine-day wonder; he is back to site,” Mr. Suhuyini assured.
The Pokuase–Nsawam road is a vital link in the Greater Accra Region, and its rehabilitation is expected to significantly ease traffic pressure and improve travel times once completed.
