The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a strong warning to cybercriminals following the arrest of popular Swedru-based businessman and social media personality, Abu Trica, in the United States.
Abu Trica was taken into custody as part of an international investigation led by the FBI’s Cleveland Division, with crucial support from Ghanaian authorities—including the Office of the Attorney General, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Police Service, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the Narcotics Control Commission, and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In a social media statement, Sam George praised the collaborative effort among the agencies and commended the CSA for its role in the operation. He issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in online fraud:
“The message is loud and clear: we will come after you so long as you engage in cyber-based crime either against Ghanaians or any other person.”
Background to the Case
According to the U.S. Justice Department, the indictment outlines a sophisticated romance scam in which perpetrators used advanced Artificial Intelligence software to impersonate others and build deceptive online relationships.
The scammers targeted mostly elderly victims through social media and online dating platforms, presenting false identities to gain trust. Once emotional bonds were formed, the victims were manipulated into sending money for fabricated emergencies, including medical bills, travel expenses, or fake investment opportunities.
Abu Trica is accused of playing a key role by facilitating the transfer of fraud proceeds from the United States to Ghana and other international destinations.
The Justice Department emphasised that these scams generated significant financial losses and inflicted severe emotional harm on the victims.
Authorities in both Ghana and the U.S. say the arrest marks a major step in deepening cross-border cooperation against cybercrime. Sam George reiterated that the government will continue strengthening digital security systems and pursuing offenders to protect citizens and Ghana’s reputation internationally.
Congratulations once again to the dedicated team at the @CSAGhana, led by their DG, Divine Selase Agbeti and the Law Enforcement Unit for another surgical strike at the heart of cyber fraud.
