Former Ghana defender Sam 'Foyoo' Johnson has raised concerns about the criteria used by Black Stars coach Otto Addo for player selections.

Johnson, who has a rich history with the national team and clubs like Hearts of Oak and Fenerbahçe, criticized the apparent lack of clear standards for inviting players, suggesting that it has led to complacency among some members of the squad.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Johnson pointed out that the absence of competition from local players has made some Black Stars players too comfortable in their positions.

He stated, "We need to ask, what category do we use to select players? Some of them don’t feel any pressure because there’s no competition from local players. When there’s no threat to their positions, they get complacent."

He emphasized the importance of strengthening the local football system to cultivate players who can challenge for spots in the national team.

Johnson remarked, "We must build a strong local side that gives the national team players tough competition. When they know their place is at risk, they’ll step up their game."

With Ghana's aspirations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hinging on winning their remaining matches and relying on Sudan to drop points, Johnson expressed skepticism about the team's chances.

He suggested that instead of focusing solely on AFCON qualification, the Black Stars should regroup and strategize for the World Cup qualifiers, where he believes they have a better opportunity for success.

"Let’s focus on the World Cup and organise ourselves better. If we make it to AFCON, I’ll be surprised but happy," Johnson concluded.
