The Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has urged his colleagues especially those on the Majority side to reject the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the Appointments Committee’s report on Thursday, November 13, Mr. Awuku cautioned against rushing the approval process, emphasising the importance of fully exhausting all legal and procedural avenues before making a decision.
He highlighted concerns over pending court cases related to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, questioning the potential implications if the courts were to rule in her favor.
“We hold the view and in complete fidelity to the law that we believe that these processes we can hold onto and exhaust the process. It is on this basis that we join the House, and also call on the House as well to reject the nominee,” he stated.
However, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin dismissed the call, stressing that despite ongoing court proceedings, Parliament must continue to fulfill its constitutional duties, including considering nominations presented to it.
