Samsung has confirmed it will officially end support for Tizen-based smartwatches in September 2025, finalising its transition to Google's Wear OS platform.
Samsung Confirms End of Tizen Support for Smartwatches by September 2025
Samsung has announced it will officially discontinue support for all Tizen-based smartwatches by the end of September 2025, drawing the curtain on its in-house operating system for wearables. The move marks the final step in a gradual transition away from Tizen, a process that began in 2021 when the South Korean tech giant first pivoted towards Google’s Wear OS.
In a formal statement released under the heading “Tizen Watch Service Outage Schedule,” Samsung outlined the timeline for the phase-out. “Please note that we will be discontinuing the Tizen Watch service on the Galaxy Store. The Tizen Watch service interruption will take effect after September 30, 2025. The service will be completely discontinued.”
Timeline of the Tizen Phase-Out
Samsung began winding down Tizen support in stages. The first major milestone occurred on 30 September 2024, when paid content was removed from the Galaxy Store for Tizen-based devices. The next key date was 31 May 2025, when access to free downloadable content was officially disabled.
The final stage of this process will come into effect after 30 September 2025. At that point, users will no longer be able to redownload any previously purchased apps or content from the Galaxy Store to their Tizen-based smartwatches.
Tizen-Based Smartwatches Affected
While Samsung has not published an official list of all devices affected, the following smartwatches are widely expected to lose support:
Galaxy Gear Series:
- Samsung Galaxy Gear (original)
- Samsung Galaxy Gear 2
- Samsung Galaxy Gear S2
- Samsung Gear S3 Classic
- Samsung Gear S3 Frontier
Galaxy Watch Series (Tizen-based):
- Samsung Galaxy Watch (first generation)
- Samsung Galaxy Watch Active
- Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 3
All models released after the Galaxy Watch 3, beginning with the Galaxy Watch 4 series, run on Wear OS and will not be affected by this change.
TVs Still Running on Tizen
Despite the retirement of Tizen on smartwatches, Samsung has no intention of abandoning the operating system across all product lines. The company has confirmed that its smart TVs will continue to use Tizen, offering software support for up to seven years. For now, there are no plans to transition its television portfolio to Google TV.
Strategic Shift to Wear OS
Samsung’s move reflects a broader industry trend towards unified platforms. The adoption of Google’s Wear OS has allowed Samsung to leverage a more expansive ecosystem and collaborate more deeply with Android developers. The shift has already been seen in newer models, beginning with the Galaxy Watch 4, and it will now become the sole path forward for Samsung’s wearable technology.
End of an Era for Tizen Smartwatches
The official end of support for Tizen-based smartwatches marks a significant turning point in Samsung’s wearable strategy. With the transition to Wear OS complete, Samsung aims to streamline user experience while continuing to offer robust support for its broader device ecosystem, including its Tizen-powered televisions. For users of older Galaxy smartwatches, however, the countdown to September 2025 is now underway.
