At least seven convicts being held at the Sandema Police Station waiting to be moved to the Gambaga Prisons in the North East Region have escaped from lawful custody, top police sources have revealed to Asaaseradio.com.

Sources said seven out of the 10 convicts forced the metal gate of the Sandema police cell open on Saturday 10 April 2021 around 10pm to gain their freedom as the three officers on duty watched helpless.

According to a police situation report in possession of Asaaseradio.com, in the process of calling for reinforcement, the convicts “escaped by forcing the metal plate at the lower part of the gate to gain ingress to the corridor and forced the wooden door leading to the charge office open.”

The escapees have been named as Amondrn Azaari, Kwesi Achalipaabey, Albert Walera, Awenyok David, Moses Amoak, Kaseley Nab and Abaniakame Adocta.

The latest incident is coming barely a week after 12 inmates from the Zenu-Atadeka police station in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region also escaped from cells.

Rearrests

Meanwhile, the police have rearrested seven out of the 12 escapees at the Zenu-Atadeka police station, an official statement said.

“Seven out of 12 suspects who were in the custody of the Zenu-Atadeka District Police, but escaped from lawful custody on Sunday 4 April 2021, have been re-arrested,” the statement said.

It added: “Six of them have been convicted by the Ashaiman Circuit Court on their own plea, on charges related to their escape from lawful custody. The Tema Police Regional Command is making all efforts to re-arrest the remaining five wanted persons whose pictures are here attached and calls on the public to assist.”
